The condition causes the tubes inside your lungs to narrow during exercise, triggering symptoms of asthma. What's behind EIB? The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology says people with the condition are sensitive to cold and dry air. While the typical pattern of breathing through the nose will warm and moisten the air, during exercise, people tend to breathe more through the mouth. This allows cooler, drier air to reach the lungs. What else can trigger EIB? Air pollution, allergens, respiratory infections and being out of shape are at the top of the list, the academy says. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration offers these guidelines to help you take an antibiotic properly:
     • Finish your prescription without missing any dose -- even if you stop feeling sick. South Korean researchers used X-rays to assess the severity of knee osteoarthritis in 660 men and women, aged 65 and older. The patients were also evaluated for the severity of their symptoms and for depression. As expected, levels of pain were higher in patients whose X-rays showed greater joint damage. However, the researchers also found that depression was associated with an increase in pain in patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis, even when significant joint damage was not evident in the X-ray image. The findings are published in the March 16 issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. One millisievert is 1,000 microsieverts.
Below are some facts about the health dangers posed by higher radiation levels:
* Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano had, at one point, said radiation levels near the stricken plant on the northeast coast reached as high as 400 millisieverts (mSv) an hour. That figure would be would be 20 times the annual exposure for some nuclear-industry employees and uranium miners.
* People are exposed to natural radiation of 2-3 mSv a year.
* In a CT scan, the organ being studied typically receives a radiation dose of 15 mSv in an adult to 30 mSv in a newborn infant.
A typical chest X-ray involves exposure of about 0.02 mSv, while a dental one can be 0.01 mSv.
* Exposure to 100 mSv a year is the lowest level at which any increase in cancer risk is clearly evident. A cumulative 1,000 mSv (1 sievert) would probably cause a fatal cancer many years later in five out of every 100 persons exposed to it.
* There is documented evidence associating an accumulated dose of 90 mSv from two or three CT scans with an increased risk of cancer. The evidence is reasonably convincing for adults and very convincing for children.
* Large doses of radiation or acute radiation exposure destroys the central nervous system, red and white blood cells, which compromises the immune system, leaving the victim unable to fight off infections.
For example, a single one sievert (1,000 mSv) dose causes radiation sickness such as nausea, vomiting, hemorrhaging, but not death. A single dose of 5 sieverts would kill about half of those exposed to it within a month.
* Exposure to 350 mSv was the criterion for relocating people after the Chernobyl accident, according to the World Nuclear Association.
*"Very acute radiation, like that which happened in Chernobyl and to the Japanese workers at the nuclear power station, is unlikely for the population," said Lam Ching-wan, a chemical pathologist at the university of Hong Kong.
Sources: the New England Journal of Medicine, World Nuclear Association and Taiwan's Atomic Energy Council

US life expectancy surpasses 78, a new record...

(AP) "U.S. life expectancy has hit another all-time high, rising above 78 years. Government surveys have found that people who drink diet beverages average more than 26 ounces per day (some drink far more) and that 3% of diet-soda drinkers have at least four daily. Are these diet-soda fiends true addicts? And if so, what are they addicted to? The most obvious answer is caffeine -- but that doesn't explain the many die-hard diet drinkers who prefer caffeine-free varieties.Factors besides caffeine are likely at work. Although diet soda clearly isn't as addictive as a drug like nicotine, experts say the rituals that surround diet soda and the artificial sweeteners it contains can make some people psychologically -- and even physically -- dependent on it in ways that mimic more serious addictions. And unlike sugared soda, which will make you gain weight if you drink too much of it, zero-calorie soda doesn't seem to have an immediate downside that prevents people from overindulging." To read the full article please click here.
Boost your optimal health plan with nutritional supplements for adults of all ages from Good Health Supplements.

Vitamin D may help keep blood sugar under control...

(Reuters) " Drinking yogurt with extra vitamin D may help people with diabetes regulate their blood sugar, a study from Iran finds.
In the trial, 90 adults with diabetes were divided into three groups, all given daily yogurt drinks: one group received plain yogurt, one got yogurt with extra vitamin D, and one was given yogurt with extra vitamin D and calcium. Citing information and backing recommendations from their Scientific Advisory Committee, the U.K.’s Department of Health is asking people to cut down on the amount of red meat they're consuming. Connecting red and processed meats to increased bowel cancer risks, the Scientific Advisory Committee last week asked for daily intake limits to be cut to about 70 grams per day. The committee estimates that most men in the U.K. are regularly consuming more than 90 grams of meat daily. Might fiber also offer other health benefits?
THIS STUDY analyzed medical and food consumption data on 388,122 adults older than 50. In a nine-year span, 31,456 of them died. People who routinely consumed the most fiber - an average of 24 grams daily for men, 26 for women - were 22 percent less likely to have died in this time than were those whose diets included the least amount of fiber. Among men, high fiber intake lowered the risk for dying from infectious diseases by 56 percent, from respiratory diseases by 31 percent and from cardiovascular disease by 24 percent; among women, risks fell by 59 percent, 46 percent and 34 percent, respectively. Higher consumption of fiber also lessened the chances of dying from cancer for men, but not for women. As intake of fiber from whole grains increased, the chance of dying from these diseases decreased. That did not apply to fiber from other sources, such as fruits. See how these not-so-popular foods can help you stay on the road to wellness.
Black rice contains iron and carbohydrates. Its color comes from antioxidant pigments known as anthyocyanins. These antioxidants may help reduce muscle soreness. Try black rice with honey for breakfast.
Brussels sprouts are rich in vitamins C and K. They also have the highest levels of glucosinolates found in food. This helps make Brussels sprouts one of the most powerful immune-boosting foods available. Try them steamed with olive oil and your favorite seasoning.
Eggs are full of choline, a member of the B-vitamin family linked to memory and brain health. Add this versatile food to soup and stir-fry dishes.
Cacao Nibs are simply pieces of cacao beans with less fat and fewer calories than chocolate. He invented the low-carb diet of 1863. Even then Americans were trying out advice that urged fish, mutton or "any meat except pork" for breakfast, lunch and dinner — hold the potatoes, please.
It turns out our obsession with weight and how to lose it dates back at least 150 years. And while now we say "overweight" instead of "corpulent" — and obesity has become epidemic — a look back at dieting history shows what hasn't changed is the quest for an easy fix.
"We grossly, grossly underestimate" the difficulty of changing behaviors that fuel obesity, says Clemson University sociologist Ellen Granberg, after examining archives at the Library of Congress. She believes it's important to show "we're not dealing with some brand new, scary phenomenon we've never dealt with before." To read the full article please click here.
Boost your total health and immune system support with proven Good Health Supplements for adults of all ages.

Is indoor temperatures contributing to obesity? ....

In a recent Emax Health report it stated that..."Spending time indoors during winter months may be contributing to obesity, suggest researchers. The researchers conducted a review of evidence showing that more time spent indoors parallels rising rates of obesity. And that means that outside stimuli can bias a person's sense of how much time has passed, researchers say. "There are many proposals for how an internal clock might work, but no one has found a single part of the brain that keeps track of time. It may be that there is no such place, that our perception of time is distributed across the brain and makes use of whatever information is available," Maneesh Sahani, of the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at University College London in the United Kingdom, said in a university news release. Researchers explain that nearly 60,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Germany. The goal of the study was to determine whether or not certain activities or behaviors may decrease this risk. The study found the largest cause of breast cancer to be due to post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Nearly 20 percent of women from the study with breast cancer were in that group. An additional 13 percent of cases were caused by the lack of exercise. While there was some overlap in the groups, combining the two results in a nearly 30 percent of all breast cancer cases." To read the full article please click here.
Discover Breast Cancer Years Earlier Than A Mammogram! Quantum Health Management® Technology Has A Better Way!

Daily fruit, veggies may cut risk of heart disease death...

(HealthDay News) -- Along with all the other well-known reasons to eat more fruits and vegetables, new research indicates that doing so may reduce your risk of dying from heart disease.
